How To Choose the Right Vegetable Seeds For My First Garden

Selecting the right seeds is crucial for a thriving vegetable garden and it all begins with purchases heirloom seeds from a trusted source.

Some seeds are particularly good for beginners because they are easy to grow and have high germination rates making it more likely to succeed on your first attempt of growing your own food.

An easy way to tell if a seed is easy to grow is by looking at the seed size.

Larger seeds like those found in zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkins, beans, and various squash varieties have large seeds and are easy to grow with quick germination rates.

Meanwhile, smaller seeds like those found in broccoli, kale, and other brassica family plants tend to have slower germination, which is why it is smart to plant 3 to 4 seeds at a time to up your chances of having a successful germination.

Here are a few top choices of seeds that are easy to grow and will give you a good harvest when your new to gardening:

  • Radishes: These grow rapidly with a quick harvest in 25 days after planting making them one of the top first plants to grow. Radishes make a great topping on salads, so definitely plant a few of these to enjoy on your salad.

  • Lettuce: You can easily grow different types of lettuce such as Romaine or Buttercrunch throughout the Spring and Fall making it easier to enjoy fresh salads just be mindful that you want to dedicate an area to your salad garden of at least 4 square feet and plant a variety of lettuces to be able make fresh salads regularly.

  • Zucchini: This prolific plant can yield up to 10 pounds of zucchini per plant making it a fun addition to any garden. The zucchini is one of my favorites in the garden because it yields a lot, but this plant is large spanning 3-4 feet across, so make sure you consider that when planning your layout.

  • Green Beans: These hardy crops often produce a steady supply throughout the season with yields of 1-2 pounds per plant making it one of my top plants to grow in the garden, but I prefer the bush variety because the taste is better and less fibrous than the vine variety.

  • Peas: Thriving in cooler temperatures peas can produce around 4-5 pounds of vegetables per 10 foot row. Sweet green peas are fun and easy to grow in the garden in early Spring, but they do require a trellis of some sort to support the plant.

These are the easiest plants to grow, but we can't forget about a few other beginner friendly plants that you can start with like cucumbers, kale, yellow squash, and tomatoes.

One of the best varieties of tomatoes for beginners is the cherry tomato because they are super bountiful.

This plant does well in the ground or using the container gardening method making it very convenient to grow and it produces so many perfect bite sized tomatoes great as a healthy snack idea or for topping your favorite salads.

If your new to gardening choose a few of these varieties to begin with and remember it is always best to grow foods you already like and enjoy to eat.
